Conservation and water treatment lands abound in Southwest Florida. In Lee County alone, there are more than 30,000 acres of protected conservation land all due to the 84% of the citizens who voted for the referendum in 1996. Collier County is targeting 91,000 acres with 50,000 acres already protected. Charlotte County has more than 44,000 acres of protected habitat primarily with the Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park. Big Cypress National Preserve has 729,000 acres and the Everglades National Park has nearly 5 million acres spanning a 199 miles by 60 mile block - 1.5 million acres total.
